Ideas: Writing Begets Writing

Hello everyone who reads this blog, which is pretty much just me at this point since I haven’t publicized its existence much. It has been awhile since my last post. I’ve been wedding planning and doing schoolwork for my public relations class, and working hard at work work. I’m hoping things will start to get better this week and next.

It occurs to me that I need to start writing more.

Not just tweeting responses to the latest Downton Abbey episode, but really writing and keeping a diary. Writing helps keep things in perspective. I remember from past spurts of writing in my journal that when I was really upset about something, writing about it helped me critically examine my feelings more, and encouraged me to move past the ugliness sooner. I know that sounds corny, but it’s true. You just can’t stay angry when writing by hand. It’s too exhausting and takes too long.

Perhaps that’s one reason digital media is problematic. It’s much easier to shoot off an angry, stupid tweet or Facebook post, or an email for that matter, than it is to send an angry letter. And in today’s age, when you do it, it’s out there forever. People are even taking pictures of print letters for all to see. Permanence can be a dangerous and counterproductive thing.

So for this post, my first in awhile, I hereby announce that I will restart my journal writing. I’ll wager that it will help me blog more, because I’ll be in a writer’s frame of mind. And instead of just saying what I think out loud, I will pour it out on my diary page and summarize the most important bits in this blog.

Happy writing, everyone.
