It’s the last month of our nearly six-month trip, and we’re ready to come home. Travel has worn us out. And even though we couldn’t wait to get to Indonesia and were excited to see as much of it as we could, it’s just too large of a country to do justice in month. So we had a choice: spend the rest of our time island-hopping or stick to one island. We chose the latter, and decided to spend our time on Bali. And now that our brains have finally entered vacation-relaxation mode, I can say confidently that we made the right choice.
Bali’s a popular vacation destination today, and after some time here myself, it’s easy to see why. Whether it’s culture, beaches, food or nature you are seeking, Bali has something for everyone. We’ve had the chance to enjoy Ubud’s cultural vibe, and plan to spend our last days there indulging in great food and treating ourselves to a spa day or two. We’ve walked the wide beach of Kuta Bali as beginning surfers battled waves just offshore. We’ve had truly fantastic food from restaurants all over the island. We’ve seen the verdant tropical jungle in the interior of the island, and plan to explore and hike on a future, more action-packed, trip. And I’m back to having a caffeine addiction, since Indonesian coffee has proven too good to resist.
Besides its attractions, there are a few simple reasons Bali is a popular spot. Nearly everyone speaks English, making it easy to get around. Its tourist infrastructure is very well developed, so there are lots of easy tours to take and things to do. It’s inexpensive, so even though you are paying inflated tourist prices for everything, it’s still easy on the wallet. And it’s pretty exotic. There aren’t too many places in the world where you can witness a religious ceremony in the morning, hit the beach in the afternoon, and catch a stunning dance performance in the evening while enjoying world-class cuisine without spending hours on a bus or having a private jet.
So with a few weeks left, with the reality of American life that awaits us after we return beginning to encroach upon our hard-fought sense of calm, Bali is the perfect place to spend our time. And if you’re looking for a vacation destination that has it all, this is the place to be.
